China has deployed 15 robots in Hangzhou since May, which have issued over 170,000 warnings to motorists and pedestrians. The T2 robots, developed by SUPCON Information, stand at 1.88 meters tall and weigh 98 kilograms. Equipped with cameras, radar, and onboard computing, they identify traffic infractions such as helmetless e-bike riders or vehicles crossing stop lines.

The robots have no power to arrest, a crucial distinction that underscores their limitations. Their deployment raises questions about the future of public service and human interaction with technology. According to Cao Hui, head of SUPCON’s intelligent unmanned systems innovation centre, the benefits include fatigue-free operation and seamless integration into existing traffic management systems.

However, the claim that monthly cases of helmetless riding have fallen by over 40 percent due to these robots is difficult to verify independently. The T2 robots operate autonomously from 7 am to 6 pm, moving between preset positions while a central platform allows traffic police teams to monitor and dispatch them remotely. This setup has been replicated across eight cities in three Chinese provinces.

China’s deployment of robotics in traffic management has wider implications that warrant closer examination. As the country pushes robotics into practical roles like traffic management, what does this mean for human workers in these sectors? Will these machines become a panacea for urban issues or simply mask deeper problems?

Regulation and oversight are also pressing concerns. AiMOGA executive Zhang Guibing cautions that police robots will need to meet local laws, integrate with law-enforcement systems, and comply with certification and data-protection requirements. The complexities involved make this task daunting.

Dubbed capable of surpassing human records in speed and agility, its actual performance has yet to be independently verified. Online videos show the robot crashing into a wall after losing direction – raising questions about its reliability.

China’s robotics push may have captured global attention, but its deployment abroad is expected to be far from straightforward. Policymakers will need to carefully weigh the benefits of these technologies against the potential risks and unintended consequences.

As China continues to develop and deploy traffic-control robots, policymakers, industry leaders, and the public must engage in an open discussion about what these developments mean for our collective future – and whether they will truly serve to improve public service or exacerbate existing problems.
