A New Chapter in Ukraine’s War: What Does Trump’s Diplomatic Overture Mean?

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has been marked by brutal chapters, with hundreds of thousands killed and millions displaced. Amidst this chaos, a development has emerged that could signal a shift in strategy for Moscow: Donald Trump’s envoys meeting with Vladimir Putin to discuss “substantive plans for next steps” towards ending the war.

From the outside, it appears as though Trump is attempting to salvage his legacy on foreign policy, where he has been largely absent and ineffective. His claim that his son-in-law Kushner and business ally Witkoff are bringing a proposal to end the war reeks of desperation, especially given the lack of concrete details.
