Britain’s Railway System on a Collision Course with Climate Change
The Met Office has warned of an unprecedented El Niño event, sending shockwaves through the railway industry. Network Rail is scrambling to prepare for another brutal summer next year, as intense heat and unpredictable weather patterns become the new norm in Britain.
While the current infrastructure was not designed to handle extreme temperatures, the response from railway companies has been patchy at best. Professors Xueyu Geng and Adam Scaife have sounded the alarm on the need for drastic changes in design standards, urging Britain to follow countries like Spain and Saudi Arabia, which build railways that can withstand temperatures between 0C and 55C.
Network Rail’s decision to increase its projected five-year spending on climate-related issues by five times the amount allocated from 2019 is a welcome step forward. However, it’s still a drop in the ocean compared to what’s needed to safeguard our rail network for generations to come. Geng has emphasized the need for “manufacturing” new designs that can withstand both heat and cold temperatures.
The warning signs are clear: two trains derailed within 24 hours during this summer’s heatwave, causing exceptional challenges for the railway system. The Met Office has predicted increased rainfall and stormy weather this autumn, which will put further pressure on the network. Network Rail’s £2.6bn programme of works is a start, but it’s a reactive approach rather than a proactive one.
The industry needs to take a long-term view, recognizing that climate change is no longer an issue for the future but an immediate reality. As Ioannis Koliousis pointed out, we need to distinguish between maintenance and adaptation – clearing drains prepares us for the next storm, while redesigning or increasing drainage capacity prepares us for the next 30 years.

Britain’s railway system is one of the safest in the world, but it’s precisely this complacency that makes it vulnerable to climate-related disasters.

The answer lies not just in investing more money but also in adopting new technologies and designs that can withstand extreme weather conditions. A fundamental shift in the way we approach railway infrastructure is needed, one that prioritizes adaptability and resilience above all else.
