Space-Age Silicon: The Unlikely Frontier of Semiconductor Manufacturing
Besxar, a startup founded by Ashley Pilipiszyn, a former OpenAI staffer, is revolutionizing semiconductor manufacturing by leveraging the physics of space. Founded to address the limitations of traditional clean rooms, where even microscopic dust and contaminants can ruin a chip during production, Besxar’s solution is to take advantage of the vacuum of space.
The company has raised almost $14 million in funding from investors such as Dauntless Ventures and Overture VC, suggesting that they are taking this idea seriously. Besxar’s early results are promising: its first two “fabships” successfully flew on a July Starlink mission, protecting wafer samples from contamination.
Traditional clean rooms may soon be obsolete if Besxar succeeds in scaling up its operations. The company will supply leading chipmakers with advanced wafers used in data centers, robots, and electric vehicles. This could have significant implications for companies such as Tesla and Google that rely on high-quality semiconductors.
However, Besxar still faces several challenges. It must overcome the hurdle of heating its wafers, depositing materials, and other critical steps in the manufacturing process. Additionally, returning product from space is a problem that’s been faced by other companies working on similar projects.
Pilipiszyn notes that there is now a solid transport layer for space-based innovation, allowing Besxar to focus on the application layer. This recognition of the infrastructure for space-based manufacturing finally taking shape is significant.
As Besxar progresses towards producing its first batch of space-made semiconductors, it will be interesting to see if it’s a game-changer for the industry or just another incremental step towards more efficient manufacturing.
