A Second Chance at Dignity In the annals of animal research, few stories are as egregious as the use of chimpanzees in hepatitis B vaccine experiments in Liberia during the 1970s and early 2000s.
Hundreds of West African chimpanzees were captured from their wild habitats, subjected to invasive procedures, and experimented upon for years. Many died or were left with lasting physical and psychological scars.
The story has a more recent chapter: a group of these former research subjects has been relocated to the Humane World for Animals' Second Chance Chimpanzee Refuge in central Liberia.
